Hand-knotted rugs have superior value because those are original and uniquely handmade, not mass-produced. The high quality of knots makes a hand-knotted rug outlast over a hand-tufted one. The tufts on a tufted rug tend to loosen and come out over the time, as a hand-knotted rug can become a family heirloom and last for generations if it is used with care. A hand-tufted rug will not last as long in the level of condition. Mum's makes only hand-knotted rugs because of their sustainability and artisan's skills.
A hand tufted rug is made partially by hand and partially by a mechanized tool. This kind of a rug is made of wool and the process of creating a hand-tufted rug differs a lot from a hand knotted rug. A hand-tufted rug is made by punching strands of wool into a canvas that is stretched into a frame, with a help of hand operated tool. The process is not very time intensive, nor does it require the same level of skill that hand-knotting does.
Hand-knotted rugs surface is cut and finished in thier height by scissors, and by hand only.
After piling with wool the tufted rug is removed from the frame, and it will have some sort of backing to hold the tufts in place and together. You may often see a fabric glued to the back. To complerte the rug a frindge is added by either glueing or sewing it on. Also the surface of the wool is cut in its pile height mechanically with a machine.
Making rugs by hand-knotting requires special skills. Hand-tufted rugs are made paertly mechanically and are of less quality, less price.
